Over-Expansion of Academia causes “Two Cultures”

/The “two cultures” concept is pozzed multiple times over.  We don’t need to fracture Western civilization to thrive.

  • 2/So long as “science” meant, roughly, calculus and brewing-statistics, it was vaguely plausible that some people would master all SSScience

/But guys, it’s TCY! Every academic discipline (“STEM” & humanities) is byzantine. Subdisciplines also byzantine. Few master 1 entire field

/Back up a little bit. CP Snow delivered “The Two Cultures” in the late ’50s. After huge postwar expansion of UK university system.

/Read “Lucky Jim” for a taste. New schools popping up like mushrooms without lecturers who could teach or students who could learn.

/This impression knowledge had become too complex for a typical student to learn both science and Western culture… whom did Snow observe?

/In retrospect, obvious. The largest body of knowledge the top 5% of a population can (typically) master will be too much for the top 30%.

/Worse: further wrinkle – a cognitive elite, i.e. top 5% of the population, can reasonably expect careers where such breadth is useful.

/The top 30% can’t. They’re a professional elite but they need something like vocational/pre-professional training suit to well-paid cogs.

/Expand the system to 70% and soon we’ll get “The three Rs” about how “students” can learn English grammar or long division, but not both.

/Want to bridge the divide between the “two cultures”? Well then, they have to go back. Build a wall around campus, start deporting.
